Our BA (Hons) Social Care course will give you the skills and knowledge to make a difference in a wide variety of social care careers. You'll gain a better understanding of social policy and the social care service, and of issues such as social exclusion, poverty and care in modern society. With your knowledge and a social care qualification, you'll be able to empower others to make positive changes in their lives, helping children, families and the elderly, as well as those with mental health needs and other vulnerable groups.

The BA (Hons) Social Care course will give you a thorough understanding of social care. You will look at social care practice as well as theory, and develop an awareness of major historical developments in social care. You will study different concepts of social care and the range of settings in which it operates. You will gain a comprehensive and balanced understanding of the different needs of social care users, and learn about research methods and critical analysis of data. You will also learn vital interpersonal skills through group work and partnership working. You'll also learn about social care policy-making and supporting vulnerable people, including those with drug and alcohol addictions.

Where will I go from here?

This specialised qualification, the only one of its kind in the UK, gives you a sound foundation for a wide range of careers. Some of these areas include working with families and young people, in community care roles and housing associations. On successful completion of the BA (Hons) Social Care course you may well find yourself working for traditional public sector employers like the NHS, or within the rapidly expanding private and charity sectors.

What will I gain?

When successfully completing a module you'll gain 20 credits.  In order to gain an Honours Degree in Social Care you will need to obtain a total of 360 credits - 120 credits at each level. However, if you prefer to graduate early, you can choose from the following Intermediate Awards.

  • Ordinary Degree - 300 credits (15 modules)
  • Diploma of Higher Education - 240 credits (12 modules) 
  • Certificate of Higher Education - 120 credits (6 modules) 
  • University Undergraduate Certificate - 40 credits (2 modules) 
  • University Undergraduate Associate Certificate - 20 credits (1 module)

Remember that whichever option you choose; you'll receive only one final award.

Assessment

There are a number of assessments that you complete as part of your studies and forward to your academic tutor for grading and comments.

You'll also take a summative assessment at the end of your module. Summative assessments include coursework, exams or a mix of both. Summative assessments take place three times a year and exam venues are located around the UK. Please note that there are additional summative assessment fees for each module.

Skills for Learning Social Care

This module will show you the way to become a more effective learner. You'll cover a range of different skill areas, including information technology, academic reading and writing, finding and using sources, and study skills. You'll have the opportunity to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) that will help you reflect on your existing skills and identify gaps where you need to apply greater focus.

Who Cares? The Social Care Mosaic

This module explores in depth the issue of whose responsibility it is to care for individuals, families and vulnerable groups in society, and aims to give you an understanding of how different agencies and disciplines work collaboratively. You'll cover a broad range of subjects, from the links between social care and the community, to working effectively with carers, policy makers, professionals and a mixture of public, private, and welfare agencies.
